Old Fashion

Writing Letters. And I need to see more of these in my mail box from my grandpa. Always a day maker. We could become pen pals and chose topics like "you're great", "you're not so great" and "OMGOSH, I saw this one airplane today" My Grandpa is a pilot. Once a career, then a passion and now something that gets him in trouble with his doctor because he just can't stay away. He loves to re-build mistreated planes and sell them to other pilots. Pretty Cool? I've always thought so. In my childhood days, we'd fly everywhere, driving was never an option. Grandpa would always do the math in hours car vs. plane to help calm my nerves while flying. (I was a bit hesitant of the turbulence thing, made me feel like we were gonna die for sure) But he always got us to our destination. He's the smartest man I know and he can tell you the name of the airplane just by the sound it makes flying overhead :) My favorite memory....They would come to visit (grandma & Grandpa) and when they'd leave we (mom, Kyra and I) would wait on the hood of the car for them to take off and he'd come back around and wave at us with the wings of the plane. Growing up I bragged about that.....

So I need to go buy some fancy stationary and start this pen pal epidemic with my grandpa. Accepting ideas. Expecting results.

Honeycomb

Nothing like a Honeycomb headband to make you feel fresh. My bestie, Sarah, makes these here and here. Other things seem to be working all around me as well. A quick drive to York this evening to exchange the kiddo with his dad (4 day weekend) and I believe I'll be able to make some way on my duplex exterior with all that time on my hands.

I know I've already shown you these projects but I wanted to share the work behind the projects. I have tons more pictures to share but thought this was plenty enough to show. It was a sand, paint, wait, second coat, wait, hang, wait type of project......Lots of loud music and a few beers to get us to the end result. Next up the exterior of my duplex. It's flower season people and my yard is like a weedstock.....Progress & photos COMING SOON.

Life is better Living through Explosions

Phew, back at it. My last post was a bit on the heavier side, so today it's Monday and I want light. Light music, light rain, light creamer for my coffee, and so on. But isn't life better with some explosions?? haha. A bit dramatic. Explosions usually mean disaster, pain and massive clean up. But today I'm talking just variety. Out of the norm. An explosion unexpected. One day it'll be a good one, one day it'll probably be a bad one. BUT, at least the smoke clears and things go back to being easy. (Or normal) But I do like or respect explosions in my life. Makes me think harder and helps me understand who I am a little better.


A couple of things to recap: I mentioned my faith for the first time on Sequel. One step at a time to get to know me. :) But I came across this photo and I'm sorry this is just too much fun:What's so funny about this is "Using Me" He's sure using me for somethin' as well these 3 fine young (no longer young) women. This should tell you that you can keep on usin' him, cuz he's sure 'nuff using you, to do the things you do. Download a fun track from this album here.

SuperMom 2010

I have recently been thinking about parenthood. What's a good parent, a super parent or just raising good kids? Hardly a definition out there, I mean I can only read so many articles, jump on sides of opinions or listen to too many stories before I start to figure out my own parenthood path and my kid is 7!! (scary) He is my first. So, easily, he has become my learning curve (I suppose). But the curse you indisputably get when you become a parent is guilt and over-analysis of your supermom status.

Just so happens, I do mine alone.(well not entirely alone: I got Jesus) But things become like clockwork for me that I forget about that small (huge)part, my Faith. Until today or maybe more yesterday when I find myself in tears for most of the evening. All evening I kept laughing (while crying) "why am I crying". Well, I'm my own worst critic and parenthood has been my beat up topic for the last few months, especially. Am I making the right choices? is he eating correctly? should I let him go here or there? does he need more Dad time? on and on and on. Until last night: my stop/my realization: No matter what I do I can't get rid of this curse so put my big girl pants on and talk it out (pray first and then blog). Which left me feeling better by morning. Kinda woke up thinking "Give yourself a break, he's (Jesus) got my back"

Most of the time I'm the villain, you know, the rule giver. The brush your teeth or die giver. Or the do it or you are grounded forever giver. Ha. But sometimes I should be able to feel like the SUPERMOM in the eyes of my child. Like cotton candy for breakfast or bedtimes at 11 o'clock. Which then usually leaves me thinking I'm a bad mom because there are always emotional break downs for little people who are allowed to "do whatever they want" So most of the time I play the role of villain to Jaxson.

With all of this said, in the end maybe being the kind of mom I want to be isn't 100% possible. Or for anyone for that matter. We do want we have to, to keep our kids safe, happy and not crazy.

My Life as of today looks a lot like the way this album plays (especially track 2) In case you were wondering....

A couple of things that have happened and will happen:

(On family night at Fontenelle Forest)
a new addition to the park, some sort of owl. But as I was telling Jax about this new addition I said "Let's see the new owl" and Bret said "who" and I repeated myself 3 times until I realized what he was up to. Also we saw a few turkeys, wood peckers (we named them pecker and woody, creative?) We played a few wooden made instruments and my dreams of playing the tambourine came alive. Bret built a teepee that FAILED and Jax had a great time. But conclusion on the ride home, we only go to the forest when it is FREE on family night.

"Happy Accident"

Bright eyes, Conor Oberst, or whatever he goes by these days is from Omaha, as we all know. But for me I'm not an original crop from this city, I'm a transplant. So his music was introduced to me more inland from the river and his genius music was always the songs I connected to during my college career. He became Hollywood or an alien, someone who existed but just not on my planet. Now that I live in Omaha I live very close to Fairachres which somewhere in that amazing layer of homes is his mid-western home. I drive through that neighborhood everyday and about 2 or 3 days ago, there he was (about 3 blocks from my son's school) taking a walk. A WALK! Do aliens take walks??? Well he is human after all and he is an Omaha Original so my inner fangirl had to play it cool because I'm too old to go chasing him down the street screaming "I just want to talk for a minute, I'm not crazy!!!" But inside, I couldn't believe this Happy Accident. It's the thought that counts, he knows I'm a fan because I own all of his albums, and that's where my fangirl can go crazy behind closed doors when I hear new bright eyes music.....

Burnt Out

Pretty much stalled out on this week. Midday-Thursday and I'm working on projects with less pizzazz than usual, so I'm taking my 15 minute smoker break to talk as Sequel. If I were to have a conversation with my bf right now it'd be about like this: He would say "it was a soul sucking day" and my response would be "gosh babe just wait, when I get hired to design the interiors of a showroom floor for EQ3 (which is sold in the basement of NFM) you'll no longer have soul sucking in your vocab and then you'll get whatever Eames piece you want. That's a gift worth giving!" And we'll both smile. Not stressin' a bit. But that's a bit off the map for now.

That's been my day. (3) mistakes that cost the design department a double in Design No Charges for the year. (1) mis-speced item (well actually it was 12 tables but all speced wrong) and (1) poorly worded compliment "you look very elf-y today" My response (because he is short) "takes one to know one". 5 things in one day- put my Dramatic personality in full effect. CRAZY? Yes. But this all goes back to the whole "unable to handle defeat very-well" thing that I suffer from. This is what I created to keep people away from my poison today. The Wall of Shame in front of my office/cube. (reads at the bottom "you may want to rethink working with this elf--Geoff that is not a compliment). BUT- THEN I recieved this in an email:

Mates of my State

Just announced today, Mates of State is gearing up to put out a mixed tape this summer! First step: Go get the free download of one of the singles. Second step: Dance Dance Dance! I have a crush on both Kori and Jason. They are a married couple band who tour with their kids. I always think to myself when I have them playing in my house/desk/ears, where did I go wrong? What a cool life. As parents even.......So today I want my song of the day to be all about my love of this band.

Guilt

Guitly pleasure that is. My blog is not only for me to ramble on about things that I think about but also to tell my silly little "guilty for liking" pleasures. Remember? Oh there are more where that came from.....

ISpencer (ICarly on Nickelodeon) but I LOVE Spencer (the older arty nerdy brother). Just so happens this little show is Jaxson's favorite and for Christmas he was given the 1st season on DVD. We watch it together and laugh at the same scenes over and over. Then when we are in public settings Jax will tell me to tell others about these scenes that make us laugh. That is a bit embarrassing, ya know?? I’m like “SHHHH, that is just between us, honey”
Back to Spencer: he makes these Spaghetti tacos that I have been meaning to try....and have my kid think I'm the coolest mom EVER. I may try that this weekend. Wow, it's only Tuesday, I shouldn't be speaking of the weekend quite yet......

Dreamy Friday Afternoon

I'm Lazy. I basically have all my work done for the day and it's only 2:24, which means I can totally geek out on my internet google search for furniture, accessories or anything else that I could obtain to scratch the itch for decor in the home of Ginger. But as I just said I'm being lazy and not much is striking my fancy. So blogging is the alternate. Gotta go home to a Jaxson-less home to do laundry and grind out some clean dishes (I don't have a dishwasher), not really looking forward to my Friday night but maybe a treat of redvines and a blockbuster to brighten the eve. Sofa love is always nice. Remember those strolls through Walgreen's isles only to purchase 2 things? Gummi Bears (Pronounced GOOmie) and RedVines?? I haven't had a redvine since. I think it's time. So chew on that, or more like, I will because you know I will eat the whole bag.

Just When

I was about to give up trying to stylize my son, he so gladly put on his Easter outfit for me last night and didn't complain. This fashion fitting was a success.....Now I can send him to Easter with his Dad with a part of me....my sense of BOWTIE!!!! Oh yes, bothers, men, boys get out your old bowties and dust'em off. THEY ARE BACK, now that they have the Jaxson APPROVED stamp. Cheers to you and yours on this holiday.....If only I could be sporting this fine young gentleman as an escort on Sunday. OH well...maybe a stroll in the park since spring is here.....
